To calculate the Instantaneous Rate of Discharge, ODME uses three key parameters: the oil content in parts per million (PPM), the flow rate in cubic meters, and the ship’s speed in knots. These values are displayed in the cargo control room. If the discharge rate of oil content remains below 30 liters per nautical mile and the total amount discharged does not exceed 1/30,000 of the total cargo quantity, the overboard valve opens to allow discharge. If these conditions are not met, the overboard valve closes, and the slop valve opens, ensuring compliance with MARPOL Annex 1 regulations.

MARPOL Annex 1 mandates that oil tankers with a gross tonnage of 150 tons or more must be equipped with an ODME system approved by the relevant administration.
